SLAYTHOVEN
INTRODUCTION
Slaythoven is the name of a class project for Spring 2017 at Georgetown University. We chose the grand piano as a technology to do the in-depth research of its history and modern use. By doing social technical analysis and content analysis, interviewing experts, and producing multimedia material (infographic poster, two videos, and a integrated website), we did the research on the history, architecture, algorithm and social technical relationships of the grand piano.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
In this project, I made this introduction video in order to attract visitors of the website to learn more about the technology we researched.
- Filming
- I intentionally choose the third movements of Moonlight Sonata that composed by Beethoven to match our team's name -- Slaythoven
- To film this 30 seconds video, I filmed six angles to represent the whole picture of the piano -- from outside to inside details.
- Editing
- I want to use numbers briefly introduce the architecture of the grand piano. The numbers are from small to large (1 grand piano, 3 pedals, 36 black keys, 52 white keys, 88 hammers, 230 strings). In the end, I use the icon of infinity to represent the endless melodies that a grand piano can create.
- The scenes transformation are all based on the rhythm of the piano song
INHERITANCE
INTRODUCTION
The Songjiang Shadow Puppet was created in the Qing Dynasty Guangxu. It is a branch of South China Showdow Puppet, and during its heydays, the show always had a full house for every performance. The story of this film was happed in the autumn and winter in 2015. At this time, the Songjiang Shadow Puppet had become a conservation program of the Shanghai intangible cultural heritage. Since many of the Shadow Puppet artists in the old generation had passed by, Tang Hongguan, who was 79 years old, became the only successor. To inherit this old art, Tang Hongguan tried to find a new successor. Finally, with the help of the Songjiang District Culture center, a 52-year-old actor of Shanghai Opera named Tang Jiachang was selected. However, being selected was just the start of Jiachang’s Shadow Puppet career, and he had to always challenge the limit of himself. Would Tang Jiachang overcome all the difficulties and become a qualified Shadow Puppet artist? Through the shooting of this progress, this film will show a story of folk art inheritance in China that happed in the modern city today.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
This documentary was filmed during December 2015 to March 2016, and was edited from March to May 2016. In a group of four students and a documentary professor, I was the videographer and editor. We do think that as a part of traditional Chinese culture, Shadow Puppet is going to extinct because of the lack of the successor. Thus, the story of Shadow Puppet and its inheritance should be documented and we hope it can be seen by the public to raise their attention about this disappearing treasure.
